Ron Espell Joins SRK as Principal Consultant

Ron EspellRENO, NEVADA – JULY 21, 2015 – SRK Consulting (U.S.) is pleased to announce that Ron Espell will be joining our Elko office as a principal consultant. Ron has more than 30 years of domestic and international experience in the mining industry, including environmental permitting and management, mine design for closure, mine waste management, mine water management, multidisciplinary risk assessment, and environmental geology.

Most recently, Ron worked for American Vanadium as vice president of environmental health and safety (EHS) and corporate social responsibility (CSR). His responsibilities included permitting and management of the environmental impact review for the Gibellini Project; development of EHS and CSR programs; and management of the company’s community and stakeholder engagement program. Before this, as Barrick Gold’s corporate environmental director, Ron was responsible for new project development, permitting, environmental support for financing, environmental oversight of operating mines, and the development and implementation of environmental management systems. His role involved defining permitting strategies and negotiating with regulatory agencies while developing companion internal compliance assurance programs to support permitting, approval, and financing processes.  Ron also worked for Barrick as the environmental manager for the Goldstrike Mine and the environmental director for the Australia Pacific and Africa regions. He has been involved in projects around the globe at all stages of the mining process from grass roots exploration through decommissioning to closure.

Prior to joining Barrick, Ron worked for the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, where he helped develop and implement Nevada’s mining environmental regulatory programs.  He also helped shape Nevada’s programs for mining while permitting many of the state’s largest mines, and collaborated with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and US Forest Service in developing memoranda of understanding to integrate state and federal permitting for mining projects.

Ron earned his bachelor of science in environmental geology from California State University in 1984 and throughout his career has participated actively in the development of natural resource education programs.

"As part of his industry experience, Ron and his teams have a strong track record of accomplishments over the years," said Terry Braun, president of SRK US. "We are excited to add his strong leadership skills and broad knowledge of the mining industry—as well as his energy and enthusiasm—to our consulting practice."
