Edgar Montiel

In the consulting area, he has worked as project manager for three years in Santiago, Chile, developing evaluations in both open pit and underground mining. During this period, the most important projects have been: “Analysis and design of cave system of the updated Chuquicamata Underground project” and “Stochastic Analysis of Los Pelambre Mine”. Additionally, he has been involved in the tunnel area for the Metro in Santiago, assessing the influence of the construction of buildings of more than eleven stores in tunnel sections, in order to identify the associated risks. In Mexico, Edgar has developed different stability projects for Mineras Autlan and Ternium.

Edgar participated for nine years in the Federal Electricity Commission as head of discipline in charge of various dam engineering tasks, risk analyses and excavation stability anlys. The designs of the caves and underground works of the “Santiago” Hydroelectric Project in Ecuador and “La Yesca” Hydroelectric Project stand out, being part of the on-site geotechnical team during three of the five years that the construction lasted. In 2016 he developed a series of methodologies to evaluate the blocks and rockfalls applied to maintenance within Dam Engineering by the CFE.

From 2013 to 2017 he was a proffessor at UNAM, both in the Engienering graduate studies and in the Geology and Mines-Metallurgy Degrees, where he participated in the development of the manual for geological field work. In 2016, he was awarded with the CAMIMEX Scholarship for his activities as teachor from 2015 to 2017. He has supervised six Theses related with geotechnics and numerical modeling, an activity which he is currently carrying out, as well as giving lecturing courses and talks in Mexico, Peru and Chile.

Edgar was awarded the “Alfonso Caso” Medal for academic merit for postgraduate studies. He has published nearly 28 technical papers in national and international symposia, being numerical analysis and geotechnical stability evaluations the main topic.
